Kota Falls
Kota Falls
About 50 km from Natitingou, Kota Falls descends from the Atacora mountains in several tiers, including one of 20 meters, set amid woodland and traditional villages.
Kota Falls forms a series of water cascades in the Atacora department, in the northwestern part of Bénin, approximately 50 km from Natitingou. The Kota River descends the slopes of the Atacora mountains in several successive levels carved into granite rock, the highest reaching about twenty meters. The site combines swimming during favorable seasons, forest walks, and passage through hamlets of the Atacora region.
Why visit Kota Falls
Kota Falls offers a rare contrast in this part of Bénin: a high waterfall, a pool of fresh water at the foot of the cascades, and a wooded environment backed by the foothills of the Atacora mountains. The site remains relatively undiscovered, making it a peaceful stop for those already exploring the Natitingou region and its villages.
The appeal extends beyond nature alone. The walk to the falls winds through a landscape typical of northern Bénin, dotted with round earthen huts with traditional thatched roofs characteristic of local architecture. It also offers a chance to experience Natitingou and its hinterland from a perspective beyond the well-trodden Tata Somba circuit.
What to see and do
The successive cascades
The Kota River descends the slope in several tiers. The main drop, approximately 20 meters, is the most photographed section. Below, pools invite swimming when water levels permit; during the rainy season, however, currents can make water access hazardous. Check with local villagers or your guide before entering the water.
The approach walk
From the parking area, a trail leads down to the foot of the falls. Plan for a short walk, though it can be slippery, especially after rain. Closed-toe shoes are preferable to sandals.
Surrounding villages
The hamlets bordering the trail to the falls survive primarily through agriculture. Here you can taste two emblematic regional specialties: tchoukoutou, a local millet beer brewed artisanally, and wagasi, fresh cow's milk cheese typical of northern Bénin.
Practical information
- Entry fee: A modest contribution is typically requested at the site entrance, collected by the local community.
- Guide: Hiring a local village guide is recommended, both for safety on the trails and to better understand the cultural significance of the location.
- What to bring: Water, closed-toe shoes, swimwear, insect repellent, and protection for your camera from spray.
- Visit duration: Plan for 2 to 3 hours on site, not including travel time from Natitingou.
When to go
The site can be visited year-round, but the experience varies significantly by season.
- Dry season (November to April): Easier access, passable tracks, swimming possible. Water flow diminishes toward the end of the dry season, which reduces the waterfall's spectacle.
- Rainy season (May to October): Powerful flow and very green landscapes, but tracks can be difficult and swimming is discouraged at peak flood times.
The best balance generally comes in early dry season, when water flow remains strong and tracks become passable again.
How to get there from Natitingou
The falls are about fifty kilometers from Natitingou, the main town of Atacora and the natural logistical base for a visit. The journey is made by four-wheel-drive vehicle or motorcycle taxi (zémidjan), on paved road then on laterite track that can be rocky. Depending on track conditions and season, allow 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes of travel. An early departure allows you to enjoy the site and return to Natitingou before nightfall.
What to combine in the region
A visit to Kota Falls naturally fits into a broader circuit through Atacora:
- The Tanougou Falls, other emblematic falls in the region, better known and more developed.
- The Atakora Mountains, which shape the entire landscape of northwestern Bénin.
- The village of Batia, gateway to Pendjari National Park.
- The town of Natitingou, the anchor point for exploring Atacora.
