Pendjari National Park

2,755 km² of savanna at the foot of the Atakora range, co-managed with African Parks since 2017: West Africa's last great wildlife sanctuary.

Pendjari occupies the far northwest of Bénin, at the foot of the Atakora mountain chain, spanning 2,755 km² of wooded savanna, forest galleries, and sandstone cliffs that mark the border with Burkina Faso. The park takes its name from the Pendjari River, a tributary of the Volta, which forms its northern boundary and maintains a series of permanent water holes where wildlife congregates during the dry season. Since 2017, management has been entrusted to the NGO African Parks in partnership with the Beninese state, allowing anti-poaching patrols to resume, trails to reopen, and wildlife populations to stabilize.

It is today West Africa's last great wildlife sanctuary, alongside the neighboring W National Park (shared between Bénin, Niger, and Burkina Faso) with which it forms a continuous ecological complex spanning more than 30,000 km². Our guides regularly observe savanna elephants, West African lions (an endangered subspecies, numbering roughly 100 to 150 individuals across the WAP complex), buffalo, hippopotamuses, hartebeest, Buffon's kob, warthogs, and baboons. Population density remains lower than in East African parks: you don't come to Pendjari for endless herds, but for quality wildlife viewing in a landscape few travelers know.

The park counts over 460 recorded bird species, including the Shoebill along the Pendjari riverbanks during the rainy season, fish eagles, Abyssinian rollers, and hornbills. It's also excellent for observing Nile crocodiles and hippopotamuses in the Bali, Yangouali, and Bori water holes, which rank among the most active watering points from February to May.

Surrounding the park, the villages of Tanguiéta, Batia, and Porga mark the buffer zone inhabited by Berba, Gourmantché, and Waaba communities—farmers and herders who coexist with wildlife. Tanguiéta, 65 km from the Batia entrance post, serves as the logistical hub: this is where we arrange supplies, meetings with community guides, and visits to the weekly market. Local gastronomy centers on tô, a millet or sorghum staple served with okra or baobab sauce, and wagasi, grilled Peul cheese found at market stalls.

Thirty kilometers from the park, the Tanougou Falls cascade down three tiers from a sandstone cliff. The lower pool remains swimmable much of the year and is our most frequent stop before or after safari. Further west, the Betammaribé villages and their tata-sombas (UNESCO-listed earthen fortress-houses) naturally extend the stay, making Pendjari a gateway to the entire Atakora backcountry.

To Discover

Safari at Bali and Yangouali Water Holes. Early morning viewing between 6 and 9 a.m. around water points where elephants, buffalo, and hippopotamuses gather to drink during the dry season. Low-angle light on the savanna and silence broken by hornbill calls.

Tanougou Falls. Three cascade tiers on a sandstone cliff 30 km from the park, with a swimming pool below. Allow 1.5 hours, accessible by 4x4 from Tanguiéta.

West African Lion Viewing. An endangered subspecies with roughly 100 to 150 individuals remaining in the WAP complex. Sightings are never guaranteed, but our guides know the transit zones between Bori and the Sacred Mare trail.

Meeting Berba Communities in Batia. The village of Batia, at the park's southern entrance, welcomes guided visits led by local eco-rangers. Exchange on wildlife coexistence and millet cooking demonstrations.

Pendjari Lodge and Clifftop Bivouac. The park's main accommodation, on the savanna fringe, with a panoramic terrace over the plain. Peaceful nights punctuated by the calls of spotted hyenas.

When to Go

The safari season runs from December to May, when the park is officially open. From December to February, temperatures remain manageable (20 to 32 °C during the day, cool mornings under the influence of the harmattan, the Saharan wind that can veil the sky with dust through mid-February). March, April, and May concentrate the best wildlife viewing, with short grass and animals forced to gather around residual water holes, though temperatures then climb to 38 °C, sometimes 40 °C in April. We recommend January–February for comfort balanced with observation, and March–April for wildlife enthusiasts willing to tolerate the heat.

From June to November, the park closes: West African monsoon rains deliver 900 to 1,100 mm of precipitation, trails become impassable, and tall vegetation makes observation impossible. August and September alone account for over half the annual rainfall. This period should be strictly avoided for this region, even though Tanougou Falls run at maximum flow.

Practical Advice

Plan for a minimum of three nights to enjoy two full safari days and a detour to Tanougou Falls. Access is by road from Cotonou: roughly 600 km to Natitingou, about 9 to 10 hours' drive, then 100 km more to Tanguiéta and the park entrance at Batia. Alternatively, we offer domestic flights to Parakou (when rotations operate) or a two-day itinerary with a stop in Dassa or Djougou to break the journey. Return can follow the same route or extend toward Togo.

The most coherent combination pairs Pendjari with Atakora and Betammaribé country (1 to 2 nights in the tata-sombas region, 2 hours' drive away), then descends toward the Collines and center for animist sites like Dassa and Savè before reaching the Plateau d'Abomey and Coast and Lagoons. Allow 12 to 15 days for a complete Cotonou–Pendjari–Cotonou loop. Comfort at Pendjari Lodge is adequate (air-conditioned rooms, on-site dining) but unpretentious: the region appeals to travelers keen on northern wildlife and cultures rather than those seeking luxury safari. Families with children 8 and up, naturalists, and photographers will find it rewarding.
