The Tamberma Country
In northern Togo, Tamberma Country reveals a unique UNESCO heritage: the Takienta, earth fortresses of the Betammariba people.
In the north of Togo, located in the border zone with Benin, lives the Betammariba, an essentially animist people who practice agriculture and hunting. They distinguish themselves through the architectural design of their homes, featuring tiered structures topped with granaries, constructed from terracotta earth. These dwellings, called Takienta, are genuine impregnable fortresses.
Koutammakou, a symbol of courage and glory for this warrior people, sparks curiosity and draws many visitors. The site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage location.
