Like the river of the same name, Couffo is a department in southwestern Benin, bordering Togo to the west, as well as the Beninese departments of Mono, Zou, and Atlantique. It was created in 1999 through the division of Mono. Its population of 741,895 inhabitants (2013) has a density of 309 hab/km2 and covers an area of 240,400 hectares, or 2,404 km2. This region of Benin is predominantly populated by the Aja, Fon, Mina, Kotafon, Ayizo, and Sahouè peoples. The communes of Couffo Couffo is subdivided into six (6) communes as follows: Aplahoué (the prefecture), Djakotomey, Dogbo, Klouékanmè, Lalo, and Toviklin.
