What of indigenous religions in Benin?

Deeply rooted in local customs, traditional religions form an integral part of Benin's spiritual landscape. Vodou beliefs, characteristic hallmarks of this religious practice, trace back to ancient times. Though these beliefs are extraordinarily varied, they share common threads. They rely on no written scripture, but rather on tradition: a body of knowledge made up of stories and practices, passed down orally from generation to generation. Multiple deities are venerated, based on the idea that the universe is an interconnected whole where everything communicates under the hierarchy of the Supreme Creator.

One encounters fetishes throughout the territory—at the entrances to settlements, in convents, sacred forests, and even in public spaces. Fâ priests, intermediaries between the spiritual and living worlds, perform rituals and sacrifices at these fetishes. They also ensure the perpetuation of these practices through initiations held in convents.

On January 10th each year, Traditional Religions Day is declared a national holiday, marked by mystical demonstrations across the entire nation.
