Atacora is a department located in the north-west of Bénin. It borders Togo to the west and Burkina Faso to the north, as well as the Beninese departments of Alibori, Borgou and Donga. Its population is 769,337 inhabitants (2013), with a density of 38 residents/km2 and a surface area of 2,049,900 hectares or 20,499 km2. It comprises approximately 517 villages and city districts as of 2013. The communes of Atacora Atacora is composed of nine (9) communes: Boukoumbé, Cobly, Kérou, Kouandé, Matéri, Natitingou (the prefecture), Pehunko, Tanguiéta and Toucountouna.
