Safaris in Bénin: How to Get Started?

Bénin is home to two wildlife parks. Pendjari Park, a rich biosphere reserve, and W Park, a reserve that spans three countries: Bénin, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Together, the WAP complex (W, Arly, and Pendjari) was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 2, 2017. This recognition was boosted by the arrival of the international NGO African Parks, which now manages Pendjari Reserve.

What useful information should you know about safari in this reserve? What is the best time to visit?

If you're searching for a wildlife reserve in West Africa for a custom safari, Bénin's parks offer tremendous potential. This country undeniably provides visitors with excellent conditions for their stay. Moreover, it is home to two wildlife parks that are exceptionally well-stocked with animal populations. Lions, buffalo, elephants, cheetahs, hippopotamuses, antelopes, baboons, and birds coexist and represent the diverse species found in the country's reserves. Both parks in Bénin are located in the far north of the country. Of all these parks, Pendjari is the most secure, well-situated, and well-managed. The best time to visit Pendjari is during the dry season. The period from December to April is ideal for an excellent safari.

How to Get to Pendjari?

With an area of 2,755 km², Pendjari Park is located in the municipality of Tanguieta, in the Atacora department in the northwest of Bénin. To get there, transport companies offer group trips from Cotonou to Tanguieta. From there, you must travel to Batia, the last village before entering the park. The adventure begins after the hunting zone, a few kilometers from Batia.

What Logistics Do You Need for a Successful Expedition?

Such an adventure requires appropriate logistics. A 4x4 vehicle equipped with roof seats allows you to observe animals from a good distance. It is best to go out early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the heat and increase the likelihood of encountering animals. Watering holes are the places where animals gather to drink. The 'Bali' pond is a perfect example. To make the most of this experience, it is advisable to spend 48 hours, or ideally 72 hours, in the reserve. More than 400 bird species, several antelope species, baboons, warthogs, buffalo, lions, elephants, and more live in this protected area that deserves to be visited.

Where to Stay at Pendjari?

On-site, there is the Pendjari Hotel, which offers a pleasant setting for a memorable stay. Spacious and clean rooms, a good restaurant—everything is there to delight you. About 5 km from Pendjari Hotel stands Pendjari Lodge, a stunning setting to rest and spend the night in the reserve. It features carefully pitched tents to accommodate park visitors. The lodge is particularly well-suited for groups and families.
