Islam in Benin
The practice of Islam in Benin follows the same traditions as Muslims worldwide. Rooted in respect for the five pillars of Islam, this faith meticulously adheres to the precepts prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad. Mosques and prayer spaces for Muslims can be found throughout Benin. Early each morning, the call to prayer from the muezzin accompanies the awakening of communities, inviting the faithful to prayer. The central mosque of Cotonou and Idi Zongo square in Cotonou are prominent places of worship. In Porto-Novo, Djougou, Parakou, and Malanville, nearly 70% of the population are Muslims.
Throughout the year, the major festivals of the Islamic calendar are observed as public holidays to allow for proper celebration. Mawlid, Tabaski, and Ramadan are the essential festivals for Muslims.
