Ouemé is a department located in South-Eastern Bénin. It takes its name from the Ouemé River that flows through it before emptying into the Gulf of Bénin. With a population of 1,096,850 inhabitants (2013), a density of 856 inh./km², and covering an area of 128,100 hectares or 1,281 km², Ouemé is predominantly populated by Goun, Tori, and Yoruba peoples. Since 2013, this department comprises 488 villages and urban districts. The communes of Ouemé The nine (9) communes of Ouemé are: Adjarra, Adjohoun, Aguégué, Akpro-Missérété, Avrankou, Bonou, Dangbo, Porto-Novo (the prefecture), and Sèmè-Kpodji. Porto-Novo is also the administrative capital of Bénin.
