It is bordered to the East by the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to the North by Burkina Faso and Niger, to the South by Borgou Department and to the West by Atacora Department. It is primarily populated by Bariba, Fulani and Dendi peoples. Its population is 868,046 inhabitants (2013), with a density of 33 per km2, and a total area of 2,624,200 hectares or 26,242 km2. Since 2013, Alibori has comprised 395 villages and city districts. The communes of Alibori This Bénin department has six (6) communes as follows: Banikoara, Gogounou, Kandi (the prefecture), Karimama, Malanville and Segbana.
