It is bordered to the south by the Togolese frontier, to the north by the town of Tanguiéta, to the east by Natitingou, and to the south by Cobly. The municipality is divided into 7 districts and 71 villages, with a population of 60,568 inhabitants. Boukoumbé covers an area of 1,036 km², with much of it characterized by hills and mountains.

In terms of its botanical geography, the soil of Boukoumbé is composed of sparse woodland, savanna with scattered trees and shrubs. Notably, the Atakora mountain range covers half of its terrain.

The rainy season runs from April to October, while the dry season spans November to March, with the Harmattan winds blowing from November to February. The average annual temperature is 18.7°C, with average annual rainfall of 1,295 mm. The best times to visit are January, February, November, and December.
