On the border with Nigeria, Pobé reveals its sacred forests, Yoruba royal palaces, and local life far from mass tourism. An authentic stop in southern Benin.

Pobé is a town worth discovering for nature lovers. This small settlement still harbors pristine forests, the majority of which are considered sacred. It is also home to botanical reserves and numerous plant species. Indeed, you can spot reptiles, monkeys, and hares throughout the wooded expanses. Yet spending time in Pobé simply means savoring an atmosphere that is 100% nature.

Pobé is a small town located in southeastern Benin. This city once fell under the rule of a Yoruba king. Descended from the lineage of the sovereign of Ifé, he wore not a crown adorned with pearl fringes but rather a copper ornament. At one time, Pobé possessed sacred forest wealth that its rulers shared with their people across generations. This vast forest, stretching as far as the eye could see, was only accessible by grace of the king. Indeed, several ethnic groups occupied the territory of the settlement: the Nagots, the Hollis, the Adjas, the Fons, among others.

Geographically, the town of Pobé sits just at the border with Nigeria. It is bounded to the north by the town of Kétou, and to the south and west by the commune of Adja-ouèrè. Its territorial span covers 400 km², representing roughly 11% of the department's area and 0.46% of Benin's territory. The town's population is currently recorded at 123,740 inhabitants, with an annual growth rate of 4.35%. With its 44 villages and neighborhoods, the commune of Pobé also has five districts: one urban (Pobè-centre) and four rural (TOWE, IGANA, AHOYEYE, ISSABA).

Regarding its geological position, the town of Pobé boasts vast forest reserves. However, these reserves appear heavily exploited by residents for agriculture and oil palm plantations. Across this landscape, the town has approximately 125 hectares of reserves in the districts of Pobé and Ahoyéyé. This is where you find all the botanical specimens and forest pockets at risk of disappearing. You can also see various types of trees such as African mahogany, silk-cotton trees, samba, and baobabs. The fauna and flora of this commune are severely threatened, largely by the invasion of local farmers.

As for tourism and hospitality, activities are scarce, if not nonexistent. Indeed, one observes modest, under-equipped hotels. Nevertheless, the small town of Pobé holds significant tourist sites still awaiting development, such as royal palaces, sacred forests, botanical reserves with diverse plant species.

Pobé enjoys a subequatorial climate with four seasons: two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. As with all Beninese towns, rainfall is more abundant in summer than in winter, reaching up to 1200 mm.

To reach Pobé, the ideal option is to travel from the capital Porto-Novo by shared taxi or rental car. Head directly north from the capital, passing through Katagon, Sakété, and Corossa. Nevertheless, road transport offers the advantage of discovering neighboring small towns. This way, travelers can capture photographs throughout the journey.
