Cotonou is the economic capital of Bénin and the largest city in the country ! A rising African city, it thrives with dynamic and youthful energy. Activities may not be abundant, but if you embrace a genuine immersion in Beninese culture, you'll find plenty to keep you engaged ! To help, follow our guide and discover all the things to do and see in Cotonou…

1. Uncover the remnants of the past

To understand Bénin's evolution, the best approach is to delve into its history. When the country was governed by a Marxist-Leninist regime under President Mathieu Kérékou, Bénin became the first African nation to abandon communist doctrine in 1989. Even today, this democratic transition fills the country and its inhabitants with pride—often described as African pioneers of political openness. Vestiges of Cotonou's communist past remain in places like the Place of the Martyrs, the Red Star Square, and Bulgaria Square, where locals point out a statue they affectionately call: "Papa Bulgaria" !

2. Dine in a maquis

If you want to experience Beninese gastronomy, head to one of the traditional maquis ! These popular eateries are both meeting places and venues for exchange and culinary discovery. Originally, maquis were hidden in private homes and unregistered. In other words, they were clandestine restaurants. Game meat was once the staple, but for environmental reasons (fighting poaching of endangered species) and health concerns (Ebola virus development), secret maquis have become increasingly rare. Today, the term encompasses both underground and official maquis. You'll even find maquis-ministres, establishments catering to a more affluent clientele !

3. Wander through Dantokpa Market

Established in 1963, it's the largest open-air market in West Africa. From spices to fresh produce, jewellery, clothing, household appliances, artisanal objects, and traditional charms—you'll find absolutely everything ! It's located along Boulevard Saint-Michel, bordering the Cotonou Lagoon.

4. Stop at Missebo to browse

Not far from Dantokpa Market lies Missebo, Bénin's premier secondhand clothing market. In this open-air space, you'll discover both brand-name goods and wax cloth merchants, the emblematic fabric of Africa. It's the perfect opportunity to shop for souvenirs and gifts while being dazzled by the multitude of colours and patterns !

5. Take a break at the beach

Nestled between the sea and the Nokoué Lake, Bénin's capital boasts long stretches of sandy beaches. Among the most popular beaches in Cotonou, you'll find: Fidjrosse beach, Erevan beach, and Obama beach. In a relaxed and festive atmosphere, you can unwind alongside locals who flock there every Sunday to recharge ! If you prefer something more peaceful, head to Family beach, a quiet, family-friendly private beach as its name suggests !

6. Explore Beninese craftsmanship

Love art ? Make your way to the Centre for Craft Promotion (CPA) and the Zinsou Foundation. These two spaces champion African art and provide local artists the opportunity to showcase and sell their work. You'll discover sculptures, paintings, furniture, artisanal objects, and traditionally woven or dyed clothing ! Beyond the permanent exhibitions, don't miss the cultural events hosted by the Zinsou Foundation !
